Next Project: Stair Makeover and Runner Install

A project that I’ve had on my mind for a while now is a front staircase makeover.  I see so many beautiful staircases on the blogs I follow and design books I read, that it’s so hard to narrow down the look and feel of what I want.

To see what we are working with, here are a few before pictures.  Our foyer is on the larger side and is two stories tall.  It bends to the left with a landing half way through.  As you can see, the carpet has seen better days.  Some other details that I want to update include staining the light wood to match the darker floor OR painting the steps black.  I also want to square off the bottom of the banister rather than having that spiral, and if possible, replace the spindles with more modern, sleeker ones.

Besides the wood, I think I want a runner so nobody slips.  There are so many designs that I have admired over the years, so here are a few of my top favs that I’m using for inspiration.

I’ve always loved Erin Gates’ leopard runner, but I’m not sure that J would go for something so bold.

Maybe a more subtle leopard, because after all, leopard is a neutral.

Maybe something in neutral pattern like this diamond design by Annie Selke…

A big YES to the dog too!  🙂

The fawn print is all the rage now, and I love it.  But I wonder if it will go out of style in a few years.  It makes a great area rug print, though!

Or maybe just something very neutral with a little texture.

I am in the very beginning part of this project and am in no hurry to complete it.  For me, taking my time, exploring all options, and deciding what’s best for a family of seven is the most important part.  So let the brainstorming begin! xo
